Obesity Campaign 2024 Report
In 2024, more than 1 billion people live with obesity, and 1 of 8 deaths attributed to non-communicable diseases are driven by overweight or obesity, mostly due to diabetes, stroke, coronary heart disease, and cancer. In addition, the increasing incidence of this among young people is also alarming as reported in the World Obesity Atlas 2024 by the World Obesity Federation, the projections for 2035 suggest that more than 1.77 billion people will be overweight, and 1.53 billion people will be affected by obesity. This will represent 54% of all adults worldwide. A significant proportion of these individuals will be in low- and middle-income countries
Our mission at Healthy Lifestyle Promotion Association is to raise awareness on the impact of lifestyle choices on health and wellbeing, we aim to empower individuals and the community to take control of their health by adopting a healthy lifestyle
Through a series of initiatives and interventions, we launched an Obesity campaign which sought to educate the public about the causes and consequences of obesity, as well as provide resources and support for individuals looking to manage their weight and improve their overall health. Campaign Activities
- Free Webinar with over 100 participants
Provided information on nutrition, portion control, and the benefits of regular exercise.
- Multimedia Public Awareness Campaign.
We Launched a 10 days’ multimedia public awareness campaign utilizing social media and radio talks.
The talks were part of the daily program titled Health tips the on state owned radio CRTV Buea Mountain Radio which reaches a population of approximately 47000 people. Through this channel we also advocated on policy changes like increased tax on highly processed foods and Alcohol
We also leveraged online platforms linked face and LinkedIn community, collaborating with health professionals and other civil society organizations events to disseminate information about obesity further amplifying the reach of the campaign
- Support Groups and Counseling
Established online support groups and counseling services for individuals struggling with obesity which is a safe space for sharing experiences and seeking guidance.
Outcomes and Impact
Increased awareness by educating over 48000 people on obesity, its risk factors, treatment modalities and the role of the community in addressing this public health concern.
