WALK THE TALK CAMPAIGN- May 25th 2024

Globally, nearly one-third (31%) of adults are considered physically inactive, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). This means they do not meet the recommended 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week. Specifically, this translates to 1.8 billion adults worldwide who are not meeting these guidelines. This is linked to increased burden of chronic diseases which are the leading cause of death.

Africans continue to suffer from chronic disease and have higher death rates compared to the rest of the world. Physical activity has been proven to help prevent and treat this conditions.

A global campaign by the World Health Organization to fight chronic diseases and promote healthy habits

This iconic event that took place in Buea on Saturday May 25th 2024, was organized by the African Center for Policy and Advocacy (ACPA) in partnership with Healthy Lifestyle Promotion Association (HeLP) was organized under the theme ” Active People, Healthy Africa”.

Objectives

  • Prevention and management of chronic diseases by promoting physical activity and walking.
  • Raise awareness on the rise of non-communicable diseases due to sedentary lifestyle.
  • Sensitization on treatment options and lifestyle modification recommendations
  • Educate the community on its role in combating chronic diseases

Campaign Initiatives

  • Educational content in the form of videos, flyers and health tips shared through Social media platforms, state owned media CRTV (Cameroon Radio and Television) radio and television campaigns, television campaigns and interviews on other media outlets including Hi TV further amplifying the message of the campaign across the entire nation
  • Health Talks, Free screening of participants for hypertension and obesity.
  • Community Walkathon with over 120 participants led by health practitioners

Campaign Outcomes

  • Increased awareness and education about the benefits of physical activity and the risks of hypertension and obesity and encouraging participants to adopt healthier lifestyles, including physical activity reaching 120 people through the walkathon and over 50.000 people through multimedia campaigns
  • Community engagement and support through established communities online and partnering with exercise support groups in Buea Cameroon. These community support groups are to help maintain the practice of physical activity.
